Organizational Development and Instructional Design

"You never truly learn something without being changed by what you’ve learned."

— T.F.Daly

When I was a Senior Operations Manager, one of the stories I told new hires during orientation was how I got my start in the hospitality industry. After the formal introductions were over, it was time for us to really meet each other. I always opened by asking,

“So, where were you in 1988?”….

That question was sure to get a round of laughter because there was always someone in the room who hadn’t even been born yet!

Over the years, I discovered this approach allowed me to connect with my new hires as I reflected back to a time in my life where many of them were at that very moment.

I could tell it was surprising for them to hear a leader share the uncertainty and failures they experienced, but also how perseverance brought me to where I was at that moment… and there was no reason at all why they couldn’t find their own success.

The irony is that my very own message would hold true for me as I came to that point in life when it’s time to explore a new kind of success.

Learn

My passion for learning and helping others learn is a gift. Over the years I’ve gained an awareness that you never truly learn something without being changed by what you’ve learned. With that in mind, it was time in my life for change.

Change

I enjoyed a long career in the hospitality industry, learning everything I could. When the company I worked for decided to close its US offices, I knew it was time for real change. After a period of reflection, I began a new journey at Clemson University, earning a Master’s in Human Resource Development and a Certificate in Online Teaching.

Learn

I excelled in areas such as Instructional Systems Design, Evaluation of Training and Development, and Instrumentation for Human Performance.

I explored developing learner-centered content based on the universal design for learning (UDL), backward design, and implementing best practices in adult learning models, e.g., ADDIE, Kirkpatrick, etc.

Change

This formal learning was a great complement the experience, skills, and competencies I developed over the years. I have been changed by what I’ve learned, and it has given me the opportunity to expand my reach… to help others learn, and to be truly changed by what they’ve learned.
